I can attest to much of what is listed in this article. Particularly the beaches near Barcelona where I once owned an apartment overlooking the Medetrennian. Now I live along the Mississippi Gulf Coast where I see water every day. I thought it was time to talk about the benefits of living near the water. I even read an article that people living on the water meaning with a sea view all day have a better outlook than the average person.

We drive by the beach often

If you have read any of my other articles, you will have read about the Mississippi Gulf Coast and how I love it here. My wife and I drive by the beach on an almost daily basis. My home is on a bayou that leads to the Gulf of Mexico. The office is about two minutes from the beach. I grew up in Orange County, CA, and went to the beach as often as I could but as with most people life gets in the way and the beach faded into the background.

When I decided to move to Ocean Springs, Mississippi on the Gulf Coast, it was to be near the water. As it happens, my wife grew up living on a cliff on the ocean. We both have seawater in our blood. We simply love it. I take lots of photos of the beach at different times of the day and year, I love walking on the sand. There are lots of other beaches around the world that are great and provide similar benefits. Enjoy this article. Mental Health Benefits

One of the most obvious benefits of being at the beach is the improvement in mental health. The sound of the waves, blue spaces, and ocean air can help to reduce stress levels, anxiety, and depression. According to marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols, the sound of the ocean has a calming effect that can help to clear the mind and reduce stress levels. This is because the sound of the waves slows down the heart rate and encourages deep breathing, which has a calming effect on the nervous system.

Physical Health Benefits

The physical health benefits of being at the beach are numerous. For starters, walking on the sand is a great way to improve physical health. The flat and soft surfaces of the beach are easier on the joints compared to hard surfaces, reducing the risk of injury and joint pain. The sand also provides a low-impact workout that can help to improve cardiovascular health, increase energy levels, and aid in weight loss. According to recent studies, walking on sand can also increase energy expenditure and help to improve lymphatic circulation.

The ocean air and water are also great sources of negative ions, which can help to boost the immune system and improve overall health. The ocean air is also rich in salt, which can help to improve breathing and reduce the symptoms of conditions such as cystic fibrosis. In addition, the ocean air is a great source of natural sunlight, providing a daily dose of vitamin D, which is important for good health.

Another great benefit of being at the beach is improved sleep. The sound of the waves and the salty air can help to promote better sleep and improve the quality of rest. This is because the sound of the waves helps to slow down the heart rate, which has a calming effect on the body and mind.

Walking on the Sand

A sandy beach walk is a great way to improve physical health and mental well-being. According to physical therapists, the feel of the sand on the soles of the feet can help to improve circulation and reduce stress levels. The loose sand can also help to stimulate nerve endings, which can improve the overall health of the feet. Additionally, walking on the sand can help to remove dead skin cells and promote good skin health.

However, it is important to note that walking on the sand can be more challenging than walking on a hard surface. This is because the uneven terrain of the sand can make it more difficult to maintain balance, especially if walking on a sunny day. It is also a good idea to wear flip-flops or walking shoes to protect the feet and reduce the risk of sand burns.

Another important factor to consider is the type of sand. According to a recent study, walking on softer sand is easier on the joints and can help to reduce knee pain. On the other hand, walking on firmer sand can provide a more intense workout, which can be beneficial for people looking to improve their physical health.

Spending Time at the Beach – benefits

Spending time at the beach can offer numerous health benefits, especially for those who spend much screen time or live in a built-up urban environment. Being away from the city streets and built-up urban areas can help to reduce stress levels

Physical Exercise

Walking on the beach is a great way to get physical exercise. The soft sand provides resistance, which can increase energy expenditure and help with weight loss. The uneven terrain of the sand also provides a challenge to the muscles, making it a good option for those looking to improve their overall health. Physical therapists often recommend beach walking as a way to strengthen the muscles and improve proprioception.

Pain Relief

For those with joint pain or knee pain, a walk on the beach can be a great way to relieve pain. The softer sand reduces the risk of injury and is gentler on the soles of the feet, making it a good option for those who have had recent surgery or need to take it easy on their joints. The wet sand acts as a cushion, reducing pressure on the feet and joints and helping to alleviate pain.

Relaxation and Stress Reduction

Relaxation and Stress Reduction: Spending time at the beach has been shown to have a calming effect on the body and mind. The sound of the waves and the ocean breeze can help to reduce stress levels and improve overall mental health. A recent study by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health found that spending time near bodies of water can have a positive impact on mental health.

Vitamin D

The beach is a great source of natural sunlight, providing a daily dose of Vitamin D. This vitamin is essential for good health, and a deficiency can lead to a host of health problems. Walking on the beach is a good way to get a healthy dose of Vitamin D, and the feel of the sand can help to increase the body’s natural inclination to be active.

Immune System

Spending time at the beach can also help to boost the immune system. The saltwater in the ocean is a natural disinfectant, and the salt and other minerals in the water can help to purify the skin and reduce the risk of infection. A soak in the ocean can also help to get rid of dead skin cells, and ocean air can help to purify the lungs.

Beach benefits – Mississippi Gulf Beaches

As I mentioned above, there are many great beaches where you can take advantage of the items discussed above. The Mississippi Gulf beach benefits are many so I have listed a few for your consideration:

  1. Fire pits – I love the fire pits. The Counties provide fire pits for the enjoyment of all. These fire pits along with the entire beach are open 24/7. Bring your own firewood and be careful with children.
  2. Sleep on the beach – If you have not slept on the beach it’s a treat. The Mississippi beaches do not have large waves so you will have to listen closely as the water ebbs and flows. Depending upon the time of the year, you can get a bit wet from the moist evening air but that’s part of the pleasure. Of course, the sand is soft and you can craft a bed of the great white sand.
  3. Fish – Obtain a fishing license and you can fish from the surf. Many varieties of fish can be caught with a rod and reel right off of the beach. Redfish, Black Drum, speckled trout, and sheepshead.
  4. Flounder gigging – Between October and December flounder can be found in the shallow surf. You may have to avoid stepping on them. Craft a stick or bring a pole and stab at the founder, throw it into the bucket, and get more. The minimum length is 12 inches there is no maximum length. The daily limit is 10. The season is all year.
  5. Kite surfing – This sport is best practiced during the fall and winter when the wind is strong.
  6. Party – You are permitted to consume alcohol on Harrison and Hancock County beaches along with Ocean Springs Beach which literally represents most of the white sand beaches on the coast.
  7. Wedding – Many get married on the beach, there are pergolas that are used along with benches and in some areas restrooms. Parking is always free on the beaches in Mississippi.
  8. Watch the water and people – Simple and relaxing. Leave your cell phone in your bag or pocket. Watch the shorebirds dive for fish.
